Assistant development and delivery manager

When I was studying my Geography A level, I took a module that looked at inadequate housing. This stood out to me so I started looking at how I could make this into a career opportunity.

My Home Group apprenticeship was the first construction industry experience I had.

I got a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Construction Practise Management. This varied course covered topics including contract law, surveying and computer technology. It was a huge help and a real step in the right direction for my career.

For my apprenticeship, I needed A-levels to get my HND. That helped me to study a Masters degree in Urban Planning too. But it’s not all about qualifications, although they have helped me. By shadowing Home Group development teams, I’ve gained invaluable industry experience too.

My role is quite varied and complex. I investigate potential sites for new housing developments. I also perform due diligence to acquire land. I project manage architects, engineers and contractors. I need to consider any conditions which will allow us to start construction works. I work with local authorities to gain planning permission too.

My role also includes all delivery functions. For example, clerk of works responsibilities. This involves checking standards of workmanship and materials. Then making sure that we follow the design specifications of a project. It also includes handover of properties.

It sounds like a real cliché but my days are all different. It’s what makes my job exciting.

I investigate sites, run financial modelling and prepare legal documentation and bids/offers. Then there's site visits and typical admin work.
